Primera Bienal de Performance de Santiago - Chile, que se llevará a cabo en la Biblioteca Santiago, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo MAC y Universidad ARCIS, desde el 24 de octubre al 4 de noviembre del 2006.
La Bienal es un espacio que se a constituido en un circuito de obras de performance nacionales e internacionales, siendo la única instancia en Chile y Latinoamérica que abre nuevas fronteras de dialogo, intercambio, reflexión y promoción a la performance desde las artes visuales.
Estas obras inscriben una tendencias desde el vídeo, la plástica, como también el tecno-arte y los medias-arts.
Incluye a más de diez curadores internacionales y, a cuarenta y ocho artistas internacionales entre los cuales esperamos contar con la presencia de Javier Abreu, destacado exponente de la Performance uruguaya que ya ha circulado en importantes lugares del arte contemporáneo tanto en América Latina como en Europa. Su participación permitirá extender los vínculos de intercambio cultural de esta experiencia entre Chile y Uruguay , lo que será de gran interés para nuestros artistas, teóricos y publico en general.

Whether under Morales, Chavez, Kirchner or Lula da Silva: in Brazil and across all of South America there are growing signs of change – despite the weight of history and a staggering array of economic and social challenges. Nowhere else is wealth so unequally distributed, does so much money disappear into other people’s pockets, are resources siphoned off rather than invested in education or infrastructure. But now a new generation of politicians governs the subcontinent: increasingly left-leaning leaders who seek a third way between an outdated concept of revolutionary utopia and discredited, unbridled liberalism. They aspire to economic power and political unity based on an ambitious model: the European Union.
Most of them have abandoned the revolution myth; all have become realists. For the revolutionaries have disappeared, and the days of dictatorships and coups are over. With the exception of Cuba, these leaders are democrats, at least in a formal sense. The advisers on issues of liberalism are silent. The corrupt are being driven out by their own people. And hope has returned. Alternatives are not necessarily wrong. Whether from Montevideo (where for the first time in Uruguay’s history a social democrat has now been elected president), Santiago, São Paulo or Buenos Aires – this exhibition presents a range of critical artistic positions within the extremely diverse artistic landscape of Latin America and looks into the question of how art can capture, represent or articulate changing social realities, new political arenas and alternative economies now that the continent is beginning to overcome the trauma of neoliberalism?
„El empleado del mes” („The Employee of the Month”) is a continually changing performance by Javier Abreu (Montevideo, Uruguay). The combination of McDonald’s staff uniform and exaggerated, parodied commentaries on the multinational concern’s bonus system, the use of „creole” ingredients – polenta (cornmeal mush) and Dulce de leche (caramel cream, the Nutella of Rio de la Plata) – as well as the omnipresence of Uruguay’s current president, Tabaré Vázquez, generate irony and a feeling of uneasiness. Abreu is holding a candlelight celebration on the occasion of the first anniversary of Vásquez’ presidency in November 2006; the president and his domestic policies also inspired the artist to create an installation consisting of 365 cans of tuna.
JAVIER ABREU (montevideo 1980) ,Artista Performático/ Artista plástico,ha realizado numerosas exposiciones y eventos en nuestro país destacándose su muestra individual en el Instituto Goethe y en la sala del Subte Municipal, ambas en el año 2005.
Su trabajo se ha exhibido en las ciudades de Montevideo, Punta del Este, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Ciudad de México y actualmente integra una muestra colectiva sobre arte y política, llamada "El Arte no nos libera de nada", en la ciudad de Weimar (Alemania).También ha participado de becas y seminarios internacionales en los Estados Unidos y en Francia.
